| - Der Frau des Expräsidenten Hayes ist dieser Tage durch die Temperenzdamen von Illinois ein „Temperenz-Album“ überreicht worden. Unter den Berühmtheiten, welche aufgefordert wurden, ein Blatt in diesem Album zu füllen, befand sich auch Mark Twain. Er gab auf seinem Blatte folgendem Gedanken Ausdruck: Vollständige Enthaltsamkeit sei eine so treffliche Sache, daß man sie nicht weit genug treiben könne; er treibe sie daher so weit, sich der vollständigen Enthaltsamkeit vollständig zu enthalten. | - The wife of ex-President Hayes has been presented these days with a “Temperance Album” by the temperance women of Illinois. Among the celebrities who were asked to fill a page in this album was Mark Twain. On his page he expressed the following thought: Complete abstinence is such an excellent thing that one cannot take it far enough; he therefore takes it so far as to completely abstain from complete abstinence. |
