Sie war seit Jahren mit Epilepsie behaftet und man verumthet, dass sie im Bade einen Krampfanfall hatte und ertrank. Wie ihr Vater mittheilt, hatte sich die Verstorbene, welche als Haushälterin für ihn fungierte, während der letzten paar Tage in der heiterste Stimmung befunden und noch gestern Abend mit ihm über eine Reise nach Bermuda gesprochen, welche Beide im nächsten März anzutreten beabsichtigten. Als sie heute früh nicht zum Frühstück erschien, begab sich eine Magd in ihr Zimmer und fand sie entseelt in der Badewanne. According to her father, the deceased, who acted as housekeeper (secretary) for him, had been in the most cheerful mood for the last few days and had spoken to him the night before about a trip to [[Bermuda]], which they both intended to take next March. When she did not appear for breakfast in the morning, a maid went to her room and found her lifeless in the bathtub. For Mark Twain, the event was a heavy blow, as Jean was the only child left to him.
