Mark Twain ist neben Bret Harte wol der bekannteste amerikanische Schriftsteller der neueren Zeit; in ihm ist das, was man heute in der Weltlitteratur »amerikanischen Humor« nennt, diese eigentümliche Mischung vom harmlosem Scherz, gutmütiger, aber trotzdem scharfer Sayter [Satire?], kaustischem Witz und urkomischer Drolligkeit, am schär[f]sten und vollendetsten zum Ausdruck gekommen. Seine Bücher sind in viele Sprachen übersetzt und besonders in Deutschland kennt man ihn ebenso gut wie hier, vielleicht noch besser. Der Name Mark Twain ruft auf den meisten Gesichtern ein heiteres Lächeln hervor, er hat vielen Freude bereitet in seinem Leben, der gute Clemens, und wol Niemandem weh getan. Ein beneidenswertes Geschick. Möge er sich dessen noch recht lange erfreuen.</td>

Along with Bret Harte, Mark Twain is probably the best-known American writer of recent times; in his works, what is nowadays - in world literature - called "American humor", that peculiar mixture of harmless jest, good-natured but nevertheless sharp satire, caustic wit and hilarious whimsy, has found its sharpest and most perfect expression. His books have been translated into many languages and especially in Germany he is known as well as he is here, perhaps even better. The name Mark Twain evokes a cheerful smile on most faces, he has brought joy to many in his life, good Clemens, and never hurt anyone. An enviable talent. May he continue to enjoy it for a long time to come.</td>
