Welche Zweifel der Humorist an dem Erfolge der Bewegung hegt, davon zeugen folgende tiefpessimistische Sätze: „Ich bin ein Freund der Mäßigkeitsbestrebungen und wünsche, daß diese Erfolg haben mögen, aber ich zweifle daran, daß die Prohibition praktisch durchführbar ist. Die Deutschen nämlich verhindern es. Sehen Sie nur, die haben soeben eine Methode erfunden, nach der man Schnaps aus Sägemehl machen kann. Nun frage ich: Welche Aussicht hat die Prohibition, wenn ein Mann eine Handsäge nehmen und hingehen kann, sich an einem Zaunpfahl zu betrinken? Welchen Wert hat die Prohibition, wenn einer Cocktails aus den Schindeln seines Daches machen kann, oder wenn er das Delirium tremens dadurch bekommen kann, daß er seinem Küchentisch die Beine absäuft?“</td></ins></div></td></tr>

Now, what chance will prohibition have when a man can take a rip saw and go out and get drunk with a fence rail?
