Clemens („Mark Twain“) giebt in einem Briefe an den Hartforder „Courant“ Aufklärung über das mysteriöse Schiff „Jonas Smith,“ das kürzlich in der Nähe von Cap Fear an der Küste von Nord-Carolina gesprochen wurde. Auf seiner Reise von Bermuda auf dem Dampfer „Bermuda“ sah Hr. Clemens am 25.Mai d. J. dasselbe Schiff; welches das Nothsignal aufgehißt hatte. Ein Boot von demselben steuerte auf den Dampfer zu, um Proviant zu holen, der auch verabfolgt wurde. Der Capitän der Barke erklärte auf Befragen, daß er vor Tagen Bermuda verlassen habe. Das schiff sei ausrangirt und zum Abbruch verkauft worden, und er habe den Rumpf desselben erstanden. Diesen Rumpf, der kaum seetüchtig war, habe er mit fünfzehn farbigen Matrosen bemannt und wolle ihn nach New-York bringen, um ihn dort mit Nutzen zu verkaufen.
