			<td>New York, 5. Okt. Mark Twain wird nach neunjähriger Abwesenheit in Europa am Samstag von London nach den Vereinigten Staaten zurückkehren, um dauernd hier zu bleiben. Er sagt, daß er verjüngt an Geist und Körper nach seinem Heimathlande zurückkehre. Er wird über Winter in New York bleiben und sich dann dauernd in seiner alten Heimath, Hartford, Conn., niederlassen. „England,“ so sagt der große Humorist, „ist der beste Freund, den wir in Europa haben, und die Vereinigten Staaten sind der einzige Freund, den England in der Welt hat. Niemand wird ein formelles Bündniß zwischen den beiden Mächten befürworten, aber das Gefühl gegenseitiger Freundschaft sollte auf beiden Seiten des Ozeans gehegt und gepflegt werden. Ich mag zu schwarz sehen, aber mir kommt es so vor, daß das Konzert der Mächte in China, welches schon zur Komödie geworden ist, mit einer Tragödie enden wird. Wenn die Krisis kommt, dann wird es das Beste für England, das Beste für die Vereinigten Staaten und das Beste für die Welt sein, wenn die Sterne und Streifen und der Union Jack Seite bei Seite wehen.“</td>

He says he is returning to his native land rejuvenated in mind and body. He will stay in New York over the winter and then settle permanently in his old home, Hartford, Conn. “England,” says the great humorist, “is the best friend we have in Europe, and the United States are the only friend England has in the world. No one will advocate a formal alliance between the two powers, but the feeling of mutual friendship should be cherished on both sides of the ocean. I may be too pessimistic, but it seems to me that the concert of powers in China, which has already become a comedy, will end in tragedy. When the crisis comes, it will be best for England, best for the United States, and best for the world if the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack fly side by side.”</td>
