<td>Besser gefiel es mir in Manhattan Beach, wo vor dem riesig langen Hotel eine vornehme Gesellschaft anwesend war, und in dem Pavillion inmitten der Rasenanlagen und Blumenbeete am Meeresstrande ein großes Orchester concertirte. Das war wirklich des Anhörens und Ansehens werth.</td>
<td>I liked it better at Manhattan Beach, where a distinguished company was present in front of the huge hotel, and in the pavilion amidst the lawns and flower beds on the seashore, a large orchestra was giving a concert. This was really worth listening to and watching.</td>

<td>Unter der anwesende Gesellschaft fiel mir ein alter Herr besonders auf. Es war, wie ich alsbald ausfand, der Humorist „Mark Twain“, Hr. Clemens, in seinen üblichen weißen Schuhen, weißem Haar, rosigem Gesicht und schwarzem Derbyhut. Einige Freunde waren bei ihm. Mark erzählte offenbar von seinen Erlebnissen. Er war wieder der Mittelpunkt, der Gegenstand allgemeiner Aufmerksamkeit. Wenn die Freunde an seinem Tisch lachten, so lächelte Alles ringsumher auf der Veranda, obwohl sicher Niemand sonst verstand, was er gesagt hatte. Wieder ein Beispiel vom Hypnotismus des Humoristen oder der Richtigkeit des Wortes: „Laugh and the World laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.“</td>
<td>Among the company present, one old gentleman in particular caught my eye. It was, as I soon found out, the humorist “Mark Twain”, Mr. Clemens, in his usual white shoes, white hair, rosy face and black derby hat. Some friends were with him. Mark was apparently recounting his experiences. He was again the center of interes, the object of general attention. When the friends at his table laughed, everone else on the veranda smiled, although certainly no one outside his circle of friends had understood what he had said. Another example of the humorist's hypnotism, or of the accuracy of the phrase: “Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.”</td>

Das wird im Lande der „Story Tellers“ ganz besonders hoch geschätzt. Daher lauern die Berichterstatter Niemandem so hartnäckig auf wir ihm. “He's always good for a column - with picture!” sagen sie. “How did you enjoy dining with the king?” wurde er jüngst nach der Landung gefragt, und Twain erwiderte: “The king enjoyed it!” Welche Zweifel der Humorist an dem Erfolge der Prohibition hegt, davon zeugen folgende tiefpessimistische Sätze: „Ich bin ein Freund der Mäßigkeitsbestrebungen und wünsche, daß diese Erfolg haben mögen, aber ich zweifle daran, daß die Prohibition praktisch durchführbar ist. Die Deutschen nämlich verhindern es. Sehen Sie nur, die haben soeben eine Methode erfunden, nach der man Schnaps aus Sägemehl machen kann. Nun frage ich: Welche Aussicht hat die Prohibition, wenn ein Mann eine Handsäge nehmen und hingehen kann, sich an einem Zaunpfahl zu betrinken? Welchen Werth hat die Prohibition, wenn einer Cocktails aus den Schindeln seines Daches machen kann, oder wenn er das Tremens dadurch bekommen kann, daß er seinem Küchentisch die Beine absäuft?“</td>
<td>The secret of Twain's popularity is above all his ability to amuse or at least entertain. This is especially valued in the land of the “story tellers”. That's why reporters are so persistent in their pursuit of him. “He's always good for a column - with picture!” they say. “How did you enjoy dining with the king?” he was asked recently after landing, and Twain replied, “The king enjoyed it!” The doubts the humorist has about the success of Prohibition are evidenced by the following deeply pessimistic sentences: “I am a friend of temperance efforts and wish that they may succeed, but I doubt that Prohibition is practically feasible. The Germans, you see, prevent it. Look at them. I am sorry to learn that they have just invented a method of making brandy out of Sawdust. Now, what chance will prohibition have when a man can take a rip saw and go out and get drunk with a fence rail? What is the good of prohibition if a man is able to make brandy smashes out of the shingles of his roof, or if he can get delirium tremens by drinking the legs off his kitchen table”</td>

<td>Das sind so Muster seines Witzes, nicht wegen seiner Tiefe gut, sondern weil er so spontan erfolgt, und deßwegen der Menge imponirt. Eine weitere Eigenthümlichkeit von Hr. Clemens, die er mit allen wirklich großen Humoristen und Komikern gemein hat ist, daß er selber nie lacht, und deßwegen lache seine Zuhörer um so mehr, und es wird ja behauptet, daß die größten Komiker die ernstesten, ja selber die traurigsten Menschen von der Welt seien. Sicher ist auf alle Fälle, daß die Welt in ihren Widersprüchen am allergrößten ist! Ich kannte Hrn. Clemens schon von vielen seiner Vorlesungen her, und war ich an ihm besonder bewundere, da ist seine Lebenskunst, denn er sieht mit seinem Struwelkopf von schneeweißen Haaren immer noch blühend wie eine Rose aus. Den Witz können ihm nicht Viele nachmachen, und in seiner humoristisch angelegten Natur verbirgt sich ganz sicher ein gutes Stück praktischer und bewährter Weltweisheit!</td>
<td>These are such samples of his wit, good not because of its depth, but because it is so spontaneous, and therefore impresses the crowd. Another peculiarity of Mr. Clemens, which he has in common with all really great humorists and comedians, is that he himself never laughs, and therefore his listeners laugh all the more, and it is said that the greatest comedians are the most serious, even the saddest people in the world. In any case, it is certain that the world is the greatest in its contradictions! I already knew Mr. Clemens from many of his lectures, and what I particularly admire about him is his art of living, for he still looks as blooming as a rose with his swirly head of snow-white hair. Not many can imitate his wit, and his humorous nature certainly conceals a good piece of practical and proven worldly wisdom!</td>

<td>Eine andere prominente Persönlichkeit, auf die ich in Manhattan Beach aufmerksam gemacht wurde, war der alte Senator Platt, der sich dort zur Zeit aufhielt und ziemlich einsam auf der langen Veranda saß. Seine einstige Popularität scheint er auf immer eingebüßt zu haben. Er sah zwar schwach und greisenhaft genug aus um alle Neider zu entwaffnen, doch war er von seinen Aerzten nach längerem Siechthum wieder so weit zurecht geflickt worden, daß er erklärte, er fühle sich gesund und frisch genug, wieder nach Washington zu gehen und seinen Termin im nationalen Oberhauss zu absolviren. Das war für diejenigen New Yorker, welche ghofft hatten, der Senator der Express-Gesellschaften werde resigniren und einem Senator des Staates New York Platz machen, eine schwere Enttäuschung. Sie wünschen dem alten Platt ein langes Leben, aber nur unter der Bedingung, daß er sich endlich dazu entschließt, die Thüre de Bundessenats von draußen zuzumachen. Lange wird Hr. Platt diesem Wunsche nicht mehr widerstehen können, denn was die Mediziner zusammenflicken, hält nicht lange Stand, und Platt's Tage sind offenbar gezählt. Er ist in seinen alten Tagen fortwährend in Skandalprozesse verwickelt von schönen Abenteurerinnen, denen es nach einem Brocken von seinen Millionen gelüstet, und seines Reich thums wird er sicher gar nicht froh. Wer möchte den gebrochenen alten Mann um seine Millionen beneiden, deren Vertheidigung ihm viel mehr Sorgen macht als deren Genuß ihn erfreuen kann! Wie gern müßte er bereit sein, seine Reichthümer an Mark Twain gegen einen kleinen Theil von dessen Jugendlichkeit, Lebenskraft und Humor einzutauschen! Aber verspätete Reue nützt nichts, und Weltweisheit, die sich den Menschen erst offenbart wenn sie mit einem Fuße im Grabe stehen, ist nur ein Kassandraruf und keinen Pfifferling werth.</td>
<td>Another prominent personality my attention was directed to in Manhattan Beach was old Senator Platt, who was presently staying there, sitting rather lonely on the long porch. He seems to have forfeited forever his former popularity. Though he looked weak and aged enough to disarm all enviers, he had been patched up by his physicians after a prolonged infirmity to the point of declaring that he felt well and fresh enough to go back to Washington and complete his appointment in the national House of Lords. This was a severe disappointment to those New Yorkers who had hoped that the senator of the Express Companies [?] would resign and make way for a New York state senator. They wish old Platt a long life, but only on the condition that he finally decides to close the door of the Federal Senate from the outside. Mr. Platt will not be able to refuse this wish for long, because what the doctors patch up does not last, and Platt's days are obviously numbered. In his old age, he is constantly involved in scandalous lawsuits by beautiful adventuresses who are lusting after a chunk of his millions, and he certainly is not happy about his riches. Who would want to envy the broken old man his millions, the defense of which worries him much more than their enjoyment can please him! How willing he might be to exchange his riches for a small part of Mark Twain's youthfulness, vitality and humor! But belated remorse is of no use, and worldly wisdom, which reveals itself only when people have one foot in the grave, is mostly ignored and not worth a cent.</td>
