Zu Gunsten des in Mainz zu errichtenden Gutenberg-Museums hat Mark Twain, der berühmte Schriftsteller und nebenbei auch Humorist, der gegenwärtig in London weilt, einen Beitrag eingesandt. Das nachfolgende, an Herrn Görz-Mainz gerichtete Schreiben, dessen deutscher Wortlaut der „Mainzer Anzeiger“ mittheilt, begleitete die Spende:</td>

<td>Ihre Bitte, auch meinerseits ein Scherflein zu Gutenberg's Gedächtnisfeier beitragen zu wollen, gereicht mir zur Freude und Ehre. Die Welt giebt ohne Bedenken, ohne Widerspruch zu, daß die Erfindung Gutenberg's das großartigste Ereigniß ist, das die Profangeschichte aufzuweisen hat. Sie erschuf eine neue und wunderbare Erde, zugleich aber auch eine neue Hölle. Beide hat sie während fünf Jahrhunderten alljährlich mit neuen Begebnissen, neuen Gestaltungen, neuen Wundern ausgestattet. Sie fand die Wahrheit auf der Erde wandelnd und gab ihr Schwingen; aber auch die Lüge schritt einher, und sie hat sie mit doppeltem Flügelpaar versehen. Sie fand die Wissenschaft, wie sie sich in Winkeln verbarg und verfolgt war; sie hat ihr die Freiheit zu Land, auf den Meeren, am Firmament gegeben und sie zum willkommenen Gegenstand menschlichen Strebens gemacht. Sie fand Künste und Gewerbe in geringer Zahl vor, sie vermehrte sie mit jedem Jahr. Den Erfinder, der gemieden und verachtet wurde, hat sie groß gemacht und und den Erdball ihm zu eigen gegeben. Die Religion, die sie als machtvolle Gebieterin vorfand, sie hat sie zur Freundin und Wohltäterin des Menschen gemacht. Der Krieg war verhältnismäßig billig, aber von beschränkter Wirkung; durch sie ist er kostspielig, aber in erhöhtem Maße leistungsfähig geworden. Sie hat Völkern die Freiheit gegeben, andere Völker hat sie zur Sklaverei erniedrigt; sie ist die Begründerin und Beschützerin der menschlichen Freiheit, und doch hat sie den Despotismus da ermöglicht, wo er früher unmöglich war. Was immer die Welt heutzutage ist, gut und schlecht zugleich, durch Gutenberg's Erfindung ist sie es geworden: auf diese Quelle ist Alles zurückzuführen. Und doch bringen wir ihm unsere Huldigung dar; denn was er zum zürnenden Engel im Traume sprach, hat sich erfüllt, und das Böse, das seine großartige Erfindung verschuldet, ist tausendfach ausgeglichen durch das Gute, womit sie das Menschengeschlecht beglückt hat.</td>

The world concedes without hesitation or dispute that Gutenberg's invention is incomparably the mightiest event that has ever happened in profane history. It created a new and wonderful earth, and along with it a new hell. It has added new details, new developments and new marvels to both in every year during five centuries. It found Truth walking, and gave it a pair of wings; it found Falsehood trotting, and gave it two pair. It found Science hiding in corners and hunted; it has given it the freedom of the land, the seas and the skies, and made it the world's welcome quest. It found the arts and occupations few, it multiplies them every year. It found the inventor shunned and despised, it has made him great and given him the globe for his estate. It found religion a master <span class="translationOmission">⟪and an oppression⟫</span>, it has made it man's friend and benefactor. It found War comparatively cheap but inefficient, it has made it dear but competent. It has set peoples free, and other peoples it has enslaved; it is the father and protector of human liberty, and it has made despotisms possible where they were not possible before. Whatever the world is, today, good and bad together, that is what Gutenberg's invention has made it: for from that source it has all come. But he has our homage; for what he said to the reproaching angel in his dream has come true, and the evil wrought through his mighty invention is immeasurably outbalanced by the good it has brought to the race of men.</td>
