<td>Dem nationalen Abgeordnetenhause ist jetzt von seinem Ausschusse für auswärtige Angelegenheiten, an dessen Spitze Hitt von Illinois steht und dem auch der Deutsch-Amerikaner Otjen von Wisconsin angehört, der Entwurf eines Gesetzes zur Verbesserung unseres Konsulatswesens einberichtet; er bestimmt Folgendes:</td>

<td>Wir nennen für heute Frank H. Mason als lehrreiches Beispiel für künftige Reform. Er war ein vierzigjähriger hochgeschätzter Journalist zu Cleveland, als ihn im Jahre 1880 Präsident Hayes zum Consul in Basel ernannte; von da kam er durch Präsident Arthur als Consul nach Marseilles; von letzterem Platze als General-Consul nach Frankfurt am Main. Präsident Cleveland stand nach Beginn seiner zweiten Präsidentschaft im Begriff, Mason in Frankfurt durch einen Anderen zu ersetzen; da lief im Weißen Hause ein an Präsident Clevelands Tochter Esther gerichteter Brief von Samuel L. Clemens, (dem berühmten Humoristen „Mark Twain“ ) ein, worin das Kind gebeten wurde, seinem Papa zu sagen, daß es sehr unrecht wäre, wenn er einen so tüchtigen Mann wie den jetzigen General-Consul in Frankfurt absetzen würde. Cleveland zog nun genaue Erkundigungen ein, und schrieb darauf unter dem Namen seines Töchterchens an Clemens: Mason werde in Frankfurt bleiben, und wenn Herr Clemens noch mehr so tüchtige bisherige Consuln kenne, solle er ihre Namen mittheilen. Mason behielt dann seine Stelle in Frankfurt nicht nur unter Cleveland, sondern auch unter McKinley, und als kurz nach dem Biginn [sic] von McKinley's erster Präsidentschaft der neue General-Consol [sic] in Berlin, Julius Goldschmidt, starb, wurde Mason an dessen Stelle befördert.</td>
<td>We cite for today Frank H. Mason as an instructive example for future reforms. He was a highly esteemed journalist of forty years in Cleveland when President Hayes appointed him consul in Basel in 1880; from there he was sent as consul to Marseilles by President Arthur; and afterwards as consul-general to Frankfurt am Main. President Cleveland, after the beginning of his second presidency, was about to replace Mason at Frankfurt by another, when a letter from Samuel L. Clemens (the famous humorist “Mark Twain”) was received at the White House, addressed to President Cleveland's daughter Esther, asking the child to tell her father that it would be very wrong of him to replace such a capable man as the present consul-general. Cleveland made inquiries [about Mason] and wrote a reply to Clemens under the name of his daughter: Mason would remain in Frankfurt, and if Mr. Clemens knew of any other such capable diplomats, he should forward their names. Mason not only kept his position under Cleveland, but also under McKinley, and when shortly after the beginning of McKinley's first presidency the new consul-general in Berlin, Julius Goldschmidt, died, Mason was promoted to his place.</td>
