<td>Von einer Anstalt zur Wiederherstellung des Appetits plaudert Mark Twain in der Zeitschrift &quot;Cosmopolitan&quot; unter dem Titel &quot;Die Appetitkur.&quot; Der Artikel enthält mancherlei Interessantes über Wien und Oesterreich. Mark Twain sagt über seinen Kurort, der angeblich in Böhmen belegen [sic], natürlich eine Erdichtung des Humoristen ist: Der Name dieses Etablissements ist Hochberghaus. Es liegt in Böhmen, eine kurze Tagesfahrt von Wien entfernt, und da es zu Oesterreich gehört, ist es - natürlich - ein Kuort. Oesterreich besteht nämlich aus Kurorten; der ganzen Welt ertheilt dieses Land Gesundheit; seine Quellen sind ausnahmslos heilkräftig; seine Gesundbrunnen werden auf Flaschen gezogen und um die Erde gesandt; die Eingeborenen aber trinken Bier, was offenbar ein Selbstopfer ist. Aber Ausländer, die Wiener Bier getrunken haben, denken anders darüber. Besonders das Pilsener Bier, das man in einem kleinen Keller in einer Gasse des ersten Bezirks bekommt - der Name ist mir entfallen. (Das &quot;Reichenberger Beisel.« Red.) Der Keller ist aber leicht gefunden; Sie fragen nach der griechischen Kirche, und wenn Sie sie gefunden haben, gehen Sie in - das nächste Haus, das ist die kleine &quot;Biermühle.&quot; Sie ist weit entfernt von allem Geräusch; dort ist es immer Sonntag. Zwei kleine Zimmer mit niedrigen Decken, gestützt von massiven Bögen, sind da; die Bögen und Decken sind geweißt, sonst würden die Zimmer wie Zellen im Kerker einer Bastille aussehen. Die Möbel sind einfach und billig, gar kein Schmuck; doch ist es ein Himmel für Selbstopferer, denn das Bier ist unvergleichlich, auf der ganzen Erde ist keines damit zu vergleichen. In dem ersten Zimmer werden Sie ungefähr l2 oder 15 Damen und Herren, Civilisten, finden; im zweiten Zimmer ein Dutzend Generale und Gesandte; man kann Monate lang in Wien leben, ohne diesen Platz zu finden; doch wie man einmal davon gehört und ihn besucht hat, wird Einen ewig der Versucher plagen - Doch das ist Nebensache - fährt der Schalk fort - es ist im Vorübergehen eine Dankeserklärung für erhaltene Wohlthat. Mit meinem Thema hat es nichts gemein. Mein Thema ist &quot;Kurorte.&quot; Alle ungesunden Leute sollten sich in Wien ansässig machen und von dort aus Ausflüge nach den naheliegenden Kurorten unternehmen. Zum Beispiel einen Ausflug nach Marienbad, um überflüssiges Fleisch loszubringen; nach Karlsbad, uin die Gallensteine wegzutreiben; einen Ausflug nach Kaltenleutgeben für die Wasserkur, um der übrigen Krankheiten ledig zu werden. Alles ist so bequem. Sie können in Wien stehen und mit einem 12zölligen Gewehr ein Biskuit ach Kaltenleutgeben hineinwerfen. Zu jeder Tageszeit können Sie dort hinaus; Sie fahren mit phänomenal langweiligen Zügen, und doch haben Sie innerhalb einer Stunde den Glanz und die Hitze der Stadt für das wellenförmige Gelände, die schattigen Waldwege, die weiche kühle Luft,die Musik der Vögel und die Ruhe und den Frieden des Paradieses eingetauscht. Es gibt auch andere Kurorte, die man bequem von Wien erreichen kann, reizende Plätzchen, denn Wien sitzt im Mittelpunkt einer schönen Welt von Bergen. Hier und da ein See und ein Wald. Wahrhaftig, es liegt keine andere Stadt so schön! Im Laufe des Artikels erinnert sich Mark Twain dann noch an den Wiener Kaffee. &quot;Wiener Kaffee!&quot; ruft er. &quot;Fortwährend denke ich daran, an die unerreichbare 'Süffigkeit' dieses kostbaren Kafehauskaffees, mit dem verglichen alle Kaffees in Europa und die amerikanischen Hotelkaffees einfach flüssige Armuth sind.&quot;</td>

The article contains many interesting facts about [[Vienna]] and Austria. About a spa town, which he proclaims is located in Bohemia but which, of course, is an invention of the humorist himself, Mark Twain says:}</span> This establishment's name is Hochberghaus. It is in Bohemia, a short day's journey from Vienna, and being in the Austrian Empire is, of course, a health resort. The empire is made up of health resorts; it distributes health to the whole world. Its waters are all medicinal. They are bottled and sent throughout the earth; the natives themselves drink beer. This is self-sacrifice, apparently - but outlanders who have drunk Vienna beer have another idea about it. Particularly the Pilsener which one gets in a small cellar up an obscure back lane in the First Bezirk - the name has escaped me, but the place is easily found: You inquire for the Greek church; and when you get to it, go right along by - the next house is that little beer-mill. It is remote from all traffic and all noise; it is always Sunday there. There are two small rooms, with low ceilings are whitewashed, otherwise the rooms would pass for cells in the dungeons of a bastile. The furniture is plain and cheap, there is no ornamentation anywhere; yet it is a heaven for the self-sacrifices, for the beer there is incomparable; there is nothing like it elsewhere in the world. In the first room you will find twelve or fifteen ladies and gentlemen of civilian quality; in the other one a dozen generals and ambassadors. One may live in Vienna many months and not hear of this place; but having once heard of it and sampled it the sampler will afterward infest it. However, this is all incidental - a mere passing note of gratitude for blessings received - it has nothing to do with my subject. My subject is health resorts. All unhealthy people ought to domicile themselves in Vienna, and use that as a base, making flights from time to time to the outlying resorts, according to need. A flight to Marienbad to get rid of fat; a flight to Carlsbad to get rid of rheumatism; a flight to Kaltenleutgeben to take the water cure and get rid of the rest of the diseases. It is all so handy. You can stand in Vienna and toss a biscuit into Kaltenleutgeben, with a twelve-inch gun. You can run out thither at any time of the day; you go by the phenomenally slow trains, and yet inside of an hour you have exchanged the glare and swelter of the city for wooded hills, and shady forest paths, and soft, cool airs, and the music of birds, and the repose and peace of paradise.
