<td>Eine vielbeschäftigte Schlange. Am Schluß eines Vortrages, den Mark Twain in Neu-Seeland hielt und worin er die Temperenzbewegung berührte, erzählte er folgende Schnurre: In meinem Vaterlande kam vor einigen Jahren ein Mann in eine Stadt, und man sagte ihm: &quot;Sie können nirgends, außer in der Apotheke, etwas zu trinken bekommen.&quot; Er ging also zum Apotheker, der ihm sagte: &quot;Ich kann Ihnen ohne ärztliches Rezept nichts zu trinken geben!&quot; Aber der Mann, der dem Verschmachten nahe war, erwiederte: &quot;Dazu habe ich keine Zeit; geht es nicht anders?&quot; Der Apotheker belehrte ihn: &quot;Ja, ich könnte Ihnen wohl etwas zu trinken geben, wenn eine Schlange Sie gebissen hätte.&quot; Der Mann bat darauf um die Adresse der Schlange, der Apotheker gab Sie ihm und der Fremdling ging fort. Er kam sehr bald zurück und bat: &quot;Um Gottes willen [sic], geben Sie mir etwas: Die Schlange ist für sechs Monate voraus engagirt!&quot;</td>

At the end of a [[Savage Club Speech|lecture]] Mark Twain gave in New Zealand and in which he touched on the temperance movement, he told the following tale:}</span> In our country several years ago there was a man came into a <span class="translationOmission">⟪prohibition⟫</span> town, <span class="translationOmission">⟪a man like you Savages here,⟫</span> and they said to him, &quot;You can't get a drink anywhere except at the apothecary's.&quot; So he went to the apothecary, who said, &quot;You can't get a drink here without a prescription from a physician,&quot; but the man said, &quot;I'm perishing. I haven't had time to get a prescription. <span class="translationInsert">{Is there no other way?}</span>&quot; The apothecary replied, &quot;Well, I haven't power to give you a drink except for snake bite.&quot; The man said, &quot;Where's the snake?&quot; So the apothecary gave him the snake's address, and he went off. Soon after, however, he came back and said, &quot;For goodness' sake, give me a drink. That snake is engaged for months ahead.&quot;</td>
