<td>Diese Frage beantwortet Mark Twain im „Chicago Herald“ wie folgt: Musik ist ein Lärm, der von Menschen auf Instrumenten oder anderen Folterwerkzeugen gemacht wird. Leute, die diesen Lärm machen, nennt man Musikanten, wenn viele zusammen find, werden sie je nach dem Lärm ein Orchester oder eine „Bande“ genannt, einzelne Musikanten aber heißen, wenn sie lange Haare haben und recht bleich und interessant aussehen, Virtuosen. Die Virtuosen haben es sehr schlecht, denn selbst die ältesten Jungfrauen wollen von ihnen geküßt sein. Gegenwärtig unterscheiden wir drei Arten von Musik: die deutsche, die italienische und die französische. Der deutschen muß man, wenn man etwas gelten will, sehr andächtig zuhören. Man stopft sich daher am besten Baumwolle in die Ohren. Dann kann man dabei schlafen und die Leute glauben - falls man nicht schnarcht, was entsetzlich wäre -, man sei entzückt. Bei der italienischen kann man die Baumwolle aus den Ohren nehmen, muß aber oft mißbilligend mit dem Kopfe schütteln und Zeichen des Unwillens geben, namentlich wenn einem vielleicht gar eine Melodie einmal gefällt, denn Melodien sind verpönt und die italienische Musik also auch. Bei der franzö....doch von französischer Musik darf man nicht reden, alles, was französisch ist, ist frivol, und von Frivolem spricht man in guter Gesellschaft nicht. Dann haben wir übrigens - bewahr' uns Gott - auch eine amerikanische Musik. Das ist die entsetzlichste, aber auch die harmloseste, denn nicht einmal die Leierkasten wollen etwas von ihr wissen.</td>
<td>Mark Twain answered this question in the “Chicago Herald” as follows: Music is a noise made by people on musical instruments or other instruments of torture. People who make this noise are called musicians; when many of them find together, they are called an orchestra or a “ band,” according to the amount of noise; but individual musicians, if they have long hair and look quite pale and interesting, are called virtuosos. The virtuosos have it very bad, because even the oldest virgins want to be kissed by them. At present we distinguish three kinds of music: the German, the Italian and the French. To the German music one must listen very devoutly, if one wants to be taken serious. Therefore, it is best to put cotton in one's ears. Then you can sleep while listening to it and people will think - if you don't snore, which would be terrible - that you are enraptured. With Italian music, you can take the cotton out of your ears, but you often have to shake your head disapprovingly and give signs of displeasure, especially if you happen to like a melody, because melodies are frowned upon and so is Italian music. With French music .... however, one must not speak of French music, everything that is French is frivolous, and one does not speak of frivolous things in good company. Then, God forbid, we also have American music. This is the most horrible, but also the most harmless, because not even the hurdy-gurdies want to know anything about it.</td>
