<td>Dem Humoristen Mark Twain ist von einem anglo-amerikanischen Geistlichen der Vorwurf gemacht worden, er sei „ungehobelt und von niedriger Geburt“ (ill-bred and of low birth). Selbstverständlich blieb der Beleidigte die Antwort nicht schuldig und in dieser hat er sich besonders mit dem Vorwurf betreffs „niedriger Geburt“ befaßt. Er sagt, er sei mit seiner Herkunft sehr wohl zufrieden: eine bessere Geburt, als die, das Kind ehrlicher Eltern zu sein, könne, beim rechten Lichte besehen, Niemand aufweisen. Mark Twain ist stolz auf seine Herkunft von einfachen, nicht aristokratischen Bürgersleuten und er giebt seinem Angreifer zu verstehen, daß derselbe aristokratische Vorurtheile und Schrullen hege, wie man sie in England besitze. Je mehr Fortschritte hier der imperialistische Gedanke macht, um so häufiger wird man in Zukunft von angeblich „niedriger Geburt“ zu hören bekommen; denn es liegt in der Natur der Dinge.</td>
<td>The humorist Mark Twain was accused by an Anglo-American clergyman of being “ill-bred and of low birth”. Of course, the offended person did not fail to answer, and in his response he dealt especially with the accusation concerning “low birth”. He says that he is quite satisfied with his origin: no one can claim better birth than that of being the child of honest parents, seen in the right light. Mark Twain is proud of his origin from simple, non-aristocratic bourgeoisie and he gives his attacker to understand that he harbors aristocratic prejudices and quirks, as they do in England. The more progress the imperialist idea makes here, the more frequently one will hear in the future of alleged “low birth”; for it is in the nature of things.</td>
