<td>Der Schauspieler Toole, der als der beste Komiker Englands gilt, ist, ganz im Gegensatz zu vielen seiner Fachgenossenen, auch im Privatleben ein drolliger Kauz. Wer kennt nicht jene Geschichte, wie Toole Mark Twain empfing? „Na, dem Kerl, der stets von seinem Kalifornien schwärmt, dem wollen wir zeigen, daß unser nebliges England auch nicht so ohne ist.“ - Und er ging hin und kaufte auf dem Markte Orangen und Mandarinen, Ananasfrüchte und Pstazien, Pisangs und Bananen und indische Feigen und band sie alle hübsch säuberlich an die Sträucher und Bäume seines Gartens, um dem Gaste aus Amerika Achtung vor der Vegetation Englands einzuflößen. Mark Twain war denn auch höchlichst überrascht. „Das übertrifft sogar unser üppigstes Vegetationsbild“, sagte er, „solche Früchte wachsen bei uns auf solchen Bäumen nie, und wenn sie es thun, wachsen sie doch stets ohne - den seidenen Faden“.</td>

Who doesn't know the story of how Toole received Mark Twain? “Well, to that fellow who's always raving about his California, let's show him that our foggy England isn't all that bad either.” - And he went to the market and bought oranges and tangerines, pineapples and pistachios, pisangs and bananas and Indian figs, and tied them all neatly to the bushes and trees of his garden, in order to instill respect for the vegetation of England in the guest from America. Mark Twain was highly surprised. “This surpasses even our most lush vegetation,” he said, “back home, such fruit never grows on such trees, and if it does, it always grows without - the silken string.”</td>
