<td>Der berühmte Autor erzählt von seiner „ersten Lüge“ folgendes ergötzliches Geschichtchen: „Ich habe einen englischen Freund, mit dem ich seit fünfundzwanzig Jahren befreundet bin. Als wir gestern oben auf dem Omnibus durch die Stadt fuhren, sagte ich ihm zufällig eine Lüge, natürlich eine „modificirte“, einen Mischling, einen Mulatten. Es scheint, daß ich jetzt keine anderen mehr sagen kann. Ich setzte ihm auseinander, wie ich mich im vorigen Jahre in Oesterreich damit aus einer Verlegenheit gezogen hätte. Ich weiß nicht, was aus mir geworden wäre, wenn mir nicht gerade eingefallen wäre, der Polizei zu sagen, ich gehörte zu derselben Familie, wie der Prinz von Wales. Mit einem Male wurde die Situation sehr angenehm für mich; man ließ mich gehen und bat mich um Entschuldigung und war freundlich, dienstfertig und höflich, und man konnte nicht genug für mich thun und erklärte, wieso der Irrthum entstanden sei, und versprach, den Offizier zu hängen, der ihn begangen, und hoffte, ich würde Geschehenes geschehen sein lassen und nichts davon melden. Ich erklärte, sie könnten sich auf mich verlassen. Da sagte mein Freund streng: „Du nennst das eine modificirte Lüge. Wo ist da die Modification?“ Ich erklärte, sie läge in der Form meiner Aussage vor der Polizei. Ich sagte keineswegs, ich gehörte zur königlichen Familie; ich sagte nur, ich gehörte zu derselben Familie wie der Prinz - ich meinte natürlich die menschliche Familie. Wenn jene Leute etwas Verstand gehabt hätten, würden sie es gemerkt haben. Ich kann doch nicht umhergehen und der Polizei Verstand beibringen; das kann man doch von mir nicht verlangen.“</td>

I do not know what might have become of me if I hadn’t happened to remember to tell the police that I belonged to the same family as the Prince of Wales. That made everything pleasant and they let me go; and apologised, too, and were ever so kind and obliging and polite, and couldn’t do too much for me, and explained how the mistake came to be made, and promised to hang the officer that did it, and hoped I would let bygones be bygones and not say anything about it; and I said they could depend on me. My friend said, austerely: “You call it a modified lie? Where is the modification?” I explained that it lay in the form of my statement to the police. “I didn’t say I belonged to the Royal Family; I only said I belonged to the same family as the Prince - meaning the human family, of course; and if those people had had any penetration they would have known it. I can’t go around furnishing brains to the police; it is not to be expected.” “How did you feel after that performance?” “Well, of course I was distressed to find that the police had misunderstood me, but as long as I had not told any lie I knew there was no occasion to sit up nights and worry about it.”</td>
