<td>Die unabhängige Bewegung gegen Blaine, welche im Westen unbegreiflicherweise bis jetzt keine bedeutende Ausdehnung gewonnen hat, greift in den Oststaaten immer weiter um sich, und kann nicht verfehlen, sich in der November-Wahl in kaum geahnter Weise bemerkbar zu machen. So haben jetzt auch die unabhängigen Republikaner von Connecticut eine Adresse erlassen, worin sie ausführlich die Gründe darlegen, weßhalb James G. Blaine als Präsidentschastscandidat von guten Republikanern und amerikanischen Patrioten nicht unterstützt werden sollte. Unter den Unterzeichnern derselben befinden sich angesehene Bürger aller Berufsklassen: Professoren vom Yale College, Fabrikanten, Kaufleute, Rechtsanwälte, Staatssenatoren und Staatsrepräsentanten, Farmer, Professionisten und Industriearbeiter. Wir erwähnen nur die Deutschamerikaner Joh. Ruff von Sargent Co. und Wilh. Schollhorn von der „Schollhorn Manufacturing Co.“ In der Liste von Hartford finden wir die Namen von S. L. Clemens („Mark Twain“), Prof. Wm. D. Whitney und verschiedene andere Professoren von Yale und die Professoren Atwater, Prentice, Westgate und Winchester von der „Wesleyan-University.“ Herr Chittenden, einer der Unterzeichner aus Danbury, hat soeben seine Stelle als Sekretär des dortigen republikanischen Campagne-Clubs niedergelegt, da er die Unterstützung Blaine's mit seinem Gewissen nicht in Uebereinstimmung bringen kann. - In dem Aufruf, der speziell an die Republikaner Connecticut's gerichtet ist, heißt es unter Anderem, nachdem das Sündenregister Blaine's aufgezählt ist: „Sind die Handlungen, zu welchen sich Blaine in Briefen und öffentlichen Protokollen selbst bekannt hat, mit dem gehörigen Gefühl der Amtslehre und amtlicher Rechtschaffenheit verträglich? Die große Partei, zu der Ihr gehöret und wir gehören, ist gegründet worden, damit die Regierung dieser Nation thue, was recht ist. Die republikanische Partei ist tief heruntergekommen, indem sie einen Blaine an die Spitze der Regierung zu stellen sucht; sie würde noch mehr herunterkommen, wenn es nicht in ihren Reihen Männer gäbe, welche gegen diese Beleidigung des sittlichen Gefühls des amerikanischen Volkes Verwahrung einleiten. Blaine's Niederlage kann unsere Partei von der Herrschaft politischer Spießgesellen und Aemterjäger befreien, welche zu uns [sic] oft ihre Politik vorgeschrieben haben.“</td>
<td>The independent movement against Blaine, which has incomprehensibly not yet gained any significant traction in the West, is spreading further and further in the Eastern states, and cannot fail to make itself felt in the November election in a way hardly anticipated. Thus, the Independent Republicans of Connecticut have now issued an address detailing the reasons why James G. Blaine should not be supported as a presidential candidate by good Republicans and American patriots. Among the signers of the address are distinguished citizens of all professions: Yale College professors, manufacturers, merchants, lawyers, state senators and state representatives, farmers, professionals, and industrial workers. We will mention only the German-Americans Joh. Ruff of “Sargent Co.” and Wilh. Schollhorn of the “Schollhorn Manufacturing Co.” On the Hartford list, we find the names of S. L. Clemens (“Mark Twain”), Prof. Wm. D. Whitney and several other professors of Yale, and Professors Atwater, Prentice, Westgate and Winchester of “Wesleyan University.” Mr. Chittenden, one of the signers from Danbury, has just resigned his position as secretary of the Republican Campaign Club there, as he cannot reconcile supporting Blaine with his conscience. - In the appeal, which is specifically addressed to the Republicans of Connecticut, it says, among other things, after listing Blaine's list of sins: “Are the actions to which Blaine himself has confessed in letters and public protocols compatible with a proper sense of official doctrine and official rectitude? The great party to which you belong, and to which we belong, was formed for the purpose of doing what is right in the government of this nation. The Republican party has come low by seeking to place someone like Blaine at the head of the government; it would come lower still if there were not men in its ranks who would take caution against this insult to the moral feeling of the American people. Blaine's defeat may free our party from the domination of political henchmen and office hunters, who have too often dictated policy.”</td>
