<td>Hartford, Conn., 16. Okt. Die Stadt war heute anläßlich des Besuches des Generals Grant überfüllt mit Fremden. Die Geschäfte ruhten fast gänzlich und die Häuser waren alle festlich geschmückt. General Grant wurde formell im Bushnell Park empfangen, wo James G. Patterson, Sam. L. Clemens, (Mark Twain[)] und General Hawley Reden hielten. General Grant Grant [sic] sagte: Herr Prasident [sic] und meine Herren von Hartford! Ich bin sehr stolz auf die Begrüßungen, die mir von meinen Mitbürgern, von San Francisco bis Boston zu Theil geworden sind, dies aber ist der einzige Ort, wo ich dreimal bewillkommnet worden bin. In diesen drei Reden ist so viel gesagt worden, daß nur wenig zu bemerken übrig bleibt, außer dasß ich mit dem einen Redner in Betreff seiner Ansicht über die Generosität des amerikanischen Volkes nicht übereinstimme. (Herr Clemens hatte gesagt, daß Republiken undankbar seien.) Ich anerkenne die Generosität des amerikanischen Volkes, und was es mir gegeben hat,schätze ich höher als Gold u. Silber. Kein Reichthum in der Welt hätte mich so erfreuen können, wie die Freundlichkeit und Liebe, mit der ich überall empfangen worden bin. Sie haben heute selber ein Beispiel davon geliefert und ich danke Ihnen herzlich dafür.</td>
<td>Hartford, Conn, Oct 16, The city was crowded with strangers today on the occasion of the visit of General Grant. Business was almost entirely at rest and the houses were all festively decorated. General Grant was formally received in Bushnell Park, where James G. Patterson, Sam. L. Clemens, (Mark Twain[)] and General Hawley made speeches. General Grant Grant [sic] said, &quot;Mr. President and gentlemen of Hartford! I am very proud of the honors I have received from my fellow-citizens, from San Francisco to Boston, but this is the only place where I have been welcomed three times. So much has been said in these three speeches that little remains to be said, except that I disagree with one speaker about his view of the generosity of the American people. (Mr. Clemens had said that republics are ungrateful.) I recognize the generosity of the American people, and what they have given me I value more highly than gold and silver. No wealth in the world could have pleased me as much as the kindness and love with which I have been received everywhere. You yourself have given an example of this today and I thank you warmly for it.</td>
