<td>Als Mark Twain zum erstenmal nach England kam, machte er dort auch die Bekanntschaft des Malers James McNeill Whistler, und der letztere lud ihn ein, ihn doch einmal in seinem Atelier zu besuchen. Mark Twain folgte der Aufforderung und hatte vorher gehört, daß der Maler ein großer Spaßvogel wäre, der sich gern auf Kosten anderer einen Scherz erlaubte. Mark Twain beschloß, ihn mit seinen eigenen Waffen zu schlagen. Er machte deshalb ein möglichst dummes Gesicht, während er ganz nahe an ein Bild herantrat, an welchem Whistler noch einige Verbesserungen vornahm. „Das ist nicht übel,“ meinte er, „nicht übel, nur hier in der Ecke“ - dabei that er, als wolle er eine Wolke mit dem Finger auswischen - „nur in der EckeO [sic] ... sehen Sie die Wolke ... die würde ich auswischen, wenn ich Sie wäre.“ „Aber sehen Sie sich doch vor.“ rief Whistler nervös, „die Farbe ist ja noch nicht trocken.“ „Ach, das thut nichts,“ versetzte Mark Twain ruhig, „ich habe ja Handschuhe an.“</td>
<td>When Mark Twain first came to England, he made the acquaintance of the painter James McNeill Whistler, and the latter invited him to visit him in his studio. Mark Twain accepted the invitation and had previously heard that the painter was a great joker who liked to make jokes at the expense of others. Mark Twain decided to beat him with his own weapons. He therefore made as silly a face as possible while he came very close to a painting on which Whistler was still making some improvements. “That's not bad,” he said, “not bad, only here in the corner” - at this he gestured as if he wanted to wipe out a cloud with his finger - “only here in the corner ... see the cloud ... I would wipe it out if I were you.” “But watch out!” Whistler exclaimed nervously, “the paint isn't dry yet.” “Oh, it doesn't matter,” Mark Twain replied calmly, “I've got gloves on.”</td>
