<td>Unter den nach Redding, Conn., gesandten, für Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) bestimmten Weihnachtsgeschenken befand sich ein Elephant, eine Gabe von Robert J. Collier in New York, von dessen bevorstehender Ankunft der Humorist im Vorraus in Kenntniß gesetzt worden war. Gleichzeitig mit diesem Geschenk wurde eine große Ladung Heu als Futter für das Thier von South Norwalk an den Humoristen abgeschickt. Als die Sendungen ankamen, war Herr Clemens nicht wenig überrascht, zu sehen, daß der Elephant kein lebendes Thier, sondern ein Spielzeug von der Größe eines Kalbes war. Collier hatte sich einen kleinen Scherz mit dem Humoristen erlaubt.</td>
<td>Among the Christmas gifts sent to Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) in [[Redding]], Conn., was an elephant, a gift from Robert J. Collier in New York, of whose imminent arrival the humorist had been notified in advance. Simultaneously with this gift, a large shipment of hay was sent to the humorist from South Norwalk as food for the animal. When the shipments arrived, Mr. Clemens was not a little surprised to see that the elephant was not a living animal, but a toy the size of a calf. Collier had allowed himself a little joke with the humorist.</td>
