<td>Mark Twain ist ein eifriger Gegner der „Gesundbeterei“. Einmal als auch wieder von derselben die Rede war, bemerkte er: „Das Gesundbeten erinnert mich immer an die Apfelkur für Trunkenbolde, die in meiner Kindheit in Hannibal, meinem Heimathsort, in außerordentliche hohem Ansehen stand. Eines Tages hörte ich den Stadttrunkenbold von Hannibal eine längere Rede über die Apfelkur halten. - „Du glaubst also an diese Kur?“ erkundigte sich einer der Zuhörer interessiert. - „Ob ich daran glaube!“ erwiederte er mit begeistertem Augenaufschlag. „Ich muß doch! Hat sie mich nicht schon achtmal kuriert!“</td>

Once, when talking about it again, he remarked: “Praying for health always reminds me of the apple cure for drunkards, which was held in exceptionally high esteem during my childhood in Hannibal, my hometown. One day I heard the town drunkard of Hannibal give a long speech about the apple cure. - “So you believe in this cure?” one of the listeners inquired with interest. - “Do I believe in it!” he replied with an enthusiastic look in his eyes. “I must! Hasn't it already cured me eight times!”</td>
