<td>Das letzte Abenteuer Bayard Taylor's bei seiner Abreise nach Europa war nicht eben angenehmer Natur. Als er am Donnerstag an Bord der „Holsatia“ in See ging, wurde er von einer Excursionsgesellschaft, die der deutsche Consul Schuhmacher organisirt hatte, begleitet. Der kleine Dampfer „Virginia Seymour“ sollte die Excursionisten wieder an's Land zurückbringen. Diese verweilten aber zu lange an Bord; unterdessen wurde due See stürmisch und der kleine Dampfer „Seymour“ konnte sich der „Holsatia“ nicht nähern. Derweil senkte sich ein dichter Nebel herab, und wollte man nicht die Excursionisten nach Europa mitnehmen, so mußte die „Holsatia“ draußen vor Anker gehen bis zum nächsten Morgen. Dies geschah denn auch. Unterdessen war, da die See hoch ging, die ganze Gesellschaft seekrank geworden. Bayard Taylor hatte sich früh zu Bett gelegt, dasselbe hatten alle Andern gethan, die Cojen hatten . Die Excursionisten lagen mit bleichen Gesichtern auf den Bänken der Cajüte umher und stöhnten, daß es einen Stein hätte erbarmen mögen; in der Mitte aber stand der Humorist Mark Twain und meinte, obgleich es draußen regne, scheine es ihm doch, als ob heute noch Jemand vom Sonnenstich getroffen werden würde. Am anderen Morgen (Freitag) kehrte der Dampfer in den Sund zurück, setzte die Excursionisten aus und dampfte dann erst wieder der offenen See zu.</td>
<td>Bayard Taylor's last adventure upon his departure for Europe was not of a pleasant nature. When he set sail on Thursday aboard the “Holsatia”, he was accompanied by an excursion company organized by the German Consul Schuhmacher. The small steamer “Virginia Seymour” was to bring the excursionists back to shore. But they stayed too long on board until the sea became stormy and the small steamer “Seymour” could not approach the “Holsatia” anymore. In the meantime, a thick fog descended, and to avoid having to take the excursionists the whole way to Europe, the “Holsatia” had to anchor out at sea until the next morning. This was indeed done. In the meantime, as the sea was running high, the whole company had become seasick. Bayard Taylor had gone to bed early, as had all the others who had access to bunks. The excursionists lay around with pale faces on the benches of the cabin moaning that a stone might have felt pity; but in the middle stood the humorist Mark Twain and said that although it was raining outside, it seemed to him as if someone would still be hit by sunstroke today. The next morning (Friday) the steamer returned to the strait, dropped off the excursionists, and then headed back to the open sea.</td>
