<td>Unser Mark Twain ist gelegentlich eines Gartenfestes in Windsor dem König Edward und der Königin Alexandra vorgestellt worden, und hat in einer Unterredung von etwa einer Viertelstunde so viele Witze verübt, das dem dicken Edward vor Lachen mehrere Knöpfe abgesprungen sein sollen. Auch Alexandra geruhte, sich an der Unterhaltung zu betheiligen und sich königlich zu amüsiren, als Twain sie fragte, ob er ihr das Schloß Windsor vielleicht abkaufen könne. Wir gönnen dem Hrn. Twain die ihm zu Theil gewordene Ehre und seinen Gastgebern die ihnen durch seine Witze verursachte Belustigung, allein es kommt uns andrerseits auch etwas bedauerlich vor, das sich der große Humorist in seinen alten Tagen zur Rolle eines Hofnarrs herab läßt. Das hätte er eigentlich nicht nöthig gehabt.</td>
<td>Our Mark Twain was introduced to King Edward and Queen Alexandra at a garden party in Windsor, and in a conversation lasting about a quarter of an hour he cracked so many jokes that fat Edward is said to have popped off several buttons with laughter. Alexandra also joined in the conversation and was royally amused when Twain asked her if he could perhaps buy Windsor Castle from her. We do not begrudge Mr. Twain the honour he received nor his hosts the amusement they derived from his jokes, but on the other hand it seems to us somewhat regrettable that the great humorist in his old age should stoop to the role of a court jester. He really had no need to do so.</td>
