Haben Sie Brüder oder Schwestern?“ leitete er ein. „Es ist mir leider unmöglich mich daran zu erinnern.“ „Wie? Und dieses Bildniß dort an der Wand, das Ihnen so außerordentlich ähnelt, nicht ein Bild ihres Bruders?“ „Ach ja, jetzt geht mir ein Licht auf, es ist William, der arme William, der arme Bill, wie man ihn zu nennen pflegte.“ „Ihn zu nennen pflegte? Ist er denn todt?“ „Gewiß, oder vielmehr, ich nehme dies an. Es ist eine geheimnisvolle Sache. Wir waren Zwillinge, der Verstorbene und ich. Eines Tages, wir waren kaum zwei Wochen alt, vertauschte man uns im Bade und einer von uns ist ertrunken, wir wissen nicht, wer es war; die einen glauben, Bill, die anderen, ich sei es gewesen. Aber jetzt will ich Ihnen ein Geheimniß sagen, daß ich bis heute noch niemand anvertraut habe: Einer von uns trug ein sehr sichtbares Merkmal auf dem linken Handrücken; das war ich - und dieses Kind ist ertrunken ...“ Der Interviewer hatte bei diesen Worten unauffällig seinen Hut genommen und schlich sich rückwärts zur Thür hinaus; er fürchtete, der Wahnsinn des berühmten Mannes würde in einen Tobsuchtsanfall ausbrechen.</td>
<td>One day, as the “Gil Blas” recounts, a reporter sought out Mark Twain with the intention of asking him about details of his family life. “Are you an only child? Do you have brothers or sisters?” he began. “I'm afraid it's impossible for me to remember.” “How? And that picture there on the wall, which resembles you so extraordinarily, is it not a picture of your brother?” “Oh yes, now I remember, it is William, poor William, poor Bill, as they used to call him.” “Used to call him? Is he dead, then?” “Certainly, or rather, I suppose so. It is a mysterious thing. We were twins, the deceased and I. One day, we were barely two weeks old, we were mixed up in the bath and one of us drowned, we don't know who it was; some think it was Bill, others that it was me. But now I want to tell you a secret that I have not yet confided to anyone: One of us wore a very visible mark on the back of his left hand; this was me and this child drowned....” At these words, the interviewer had inconspicuously taken his hat and slipped out through the door. He feared that the madness of the famous man would result in a fit of rage.</td>
