Die Völker, die im Finstern wandeln werden zu rar; zu rar und zu schüchtern. Die Finsterniß, welche jetzt noch übrig, ist in Wirklichkeit nur von indifferenter Qualität und nicht finster genug für das Wild oder Spiel. Die meisten Völker, die in Finsterniß sitzen, sind mit mehr Licht versorgt worden, als gut für sie oder profitabel für uns ist. Wir sind unverständig gewesen.“</td>

<td>So beginnt Mark Twain einen Artikel im Februarheft der „North American Review.“ Um diese prächtigen Auslassungen unseres größten Humoristen den weitesten Kreisen zugänglich zu machen, hat die „Anti-Imperialist League“ von New York einen Separatabdruck veranstaltet. Es ist eine Duodez-Brochüre mit dem Titel: “To the Persons living in Darkness” [sic] von Mark Twain, die gegen Einsendung einer Briefmarke von der „Anti-Imperialist League of New-York,“ 150 Nassau-Str., Room 1520, versandt wird und die weiteste Verbreitung verdient, sowohl ihres Inhalts wegen, wie auch der prächtigen Schreibweise Mark Twain's. Mark Twain ist „der“ Humorist Amerika's, und nicht blos in den Ver. Staaten, sondern auch in Europa - besonders in Deutschland, das so viele humorfrohe Menschen hat - wird unser Humorist hochverehrt und geschätzt. Er hat eine große Gabe, an Persönlichkeiten, wie an menschlichen Einrichtungen die Schwächen und das Lächerliche herauszufinden und sie in seiner eigenartigen, scherzhaften Manier darzustellen. Dazu ist Mark Twain ein feiner Beobachter und Kenner der Menschenseele, deren feinste Züge er enthüllt. Das ungewöhnlich wechselreiche Leben des Fünfundsechszigjährigen soll an dieser Stelle später mal ausführlicher besprochen werden. Für jetzt genüge, daß die meisten Mark Twain'schen Schriften selbstverständlich in's Deutsche übertragen sind. <td>This is how Mark Twain begins an article in the February issue of the “North American Review.” To make these splendid remarks of our greatest humorist available to the widest circles, the Anti-Imperialist League of New York has organized a separate printing. It is a duodecimo pamphlet entitled: “To the Persons living in Darkness” [sic] by Mark Twain, which is distributed by the Anti-Imperialist League of New York, 150 Nassau St., Room 1520, upon receipt of a stamp, and it deserves the widest circulation, both for its contents and for Mark Twain's splendid writing. Mark Twain is “the” humorist of America, and not only in the United States, but also in Europe - especially in Germany, which has so many humor-loving people - our humorist is held in high esteem. He has a great gift for finding the flaws and absurdities in people and human institutions and portraying them in his peculiar, witty manner. Mark Twain is also a keen observer and connoisseur of the human soul, revealing its most subtle traits. The unusually eventful life of the sixty-five-year-old will be discussed in more detail here at a later date. For now, suffice it to say that most of Mark Twain's writings have, of course, been translated into German. (An edition, which has the advantage of being inexpensive, has been published by Robert Lutz in Stuttgart).</td>
