<td>Als Cleveland im November 1892 mit überwältigender Mehrheit zum Präsidenten gewählt worden, hielten die Vertreter der Ver. Staaten im Ausland, so weit sie republikanisch waren, ihre Zeit für gekommen. Einer von denen, die in Erwartung der Dinge, die nicht ausbleiben könnten, bereits ihre Sachen packten, war General-Konsul Cpt. Mason in Frankfurt. Der große Humorist Mark Twain überraschte seinen Freund Mason eines Tages bei dieser Beschäftigung. “What's up?“ fragte Mark Twain. „Meine Zeit ist um,“ antwortete Mason heiter, „wir haben einen demokratischen Präsidenten, und da ich Republikaner bin, so habe ich meine Stellung an einen guten Demokraten abgeben [sic], welcher für Frankfurt ernannt werden wird.“ „Das ist aber wirklich unerhört!“ rief Mark Twain aus, verließ das Konsulat und wendete sich nach seinem Hotel, wo er folgenden Brief an die damals einjährige Tochter des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten, Ruth Cleveland, schrieb:</td>
<td>After Cleveland had been elected President in November 1892 by an overwhelming majority, the representatives of the United States abroad, as far as they were Republican, considered that their time [in office] was over. One of those who were already packing his bags in anticipation of the things to come was Consul General Cpt. Mason in Frankfurt. One day, the great humorist Mark Twain surprised his friend Mason who was busy packing. “What's up?” asked Mark Twain. “My time is up,” replied Mason cheerfully. “We have a Democratic president, and as I am a Republican, I have to give up my position to a good Democrat, who will soon be appointed to Frankfurt.” - “This cannot be!” exclaimed Mark Twain, leaving the Consulate and heading for his hotel, where he wrote the following letter to the then one-year-old daughter of the new President of the United States, Ruth Cleveland:</td>

<td>„Meine theure Ruth! Ich gehöre zu den „Mugwumps“, und eine der strengsten Regeln unseres Ordens verbietet uns, Staatsbeamte um Gefälligkeiten zu bitten oder Freunde für ein Amt zu empfehlen. Es ist jedoch ganz harmlos, wenn ich diese freundschaftlichen Zeilen an Dich richte, um Dir zu sagen, daß Dein Vater im Begriff steht, ein großes Verbrechen zu begehen, indem er den besten Consul, den ich kenne (und ich kenne sehr viele), aus seinem Amte jagen will, nur weil er Republikaner ist, und weil ein Demokrat seinen Platz verlangt.“</td>
<td>“My dear Ruth! I belong to the “Mugwumps,” and one of the strictest rules of our order forbids us to ask favors of state officials or to recommend friends for office. It is quite harmless, however, if I address to you these friendly lines to tell you that your father is about to commit a great crime in wanting to put the best Consul I know (and I know a great many) out of office just because he is a Republican and a Democrat wants his seat.”</td>

<td>Dann erzählte Mark Twain in dem Brief, was er von Mason und seiner amtlichen Thätigkeit wußte, und fuhr weiter fort: „Ich selbst kann mich nicht an den Präsidenten wenden. Wenn Du aber, liebe Ruth, nächstens Gelegenheit hast, mit Deinem Vater über Amtssachen zu sprechen, so bitte ich Dich, den Fall Mason zu erwähnen und ihm zu sagen, wie ich über eine Regierung denke, die ihre besten Beamten in solcher Weise behandelt.“ Drei oder vier Wochen später erhielt Mark Twain einen kleinen Briefumschlag mit dem Poststempel Washington, in welchem ein Brief in Cleveland's eigener Handschrift und folgenden Inhalts steckte: „Miß Ruth Cleveland bestätigt dankend den Empfang von Mister Twain's Brief und bemerkt, daß sie sich die Freiheit genommen hat, denselben dem Präsidenten vorzulesen, welcher Mr. Twain bestens für seine Information danken läßt und ihm die Versicherung giebt, daß Capt. Mason auf seinem Frankfurter Posten verbleiben wird. Auch wünscht der Präsident Mr. Twain zu verständigen, daß, falls Letzterer noch einige andere Fälle ähnlicher Art wüßte, er ihm umgehend schreiben möchte, wodurch er ihn sehr verbinden würde.“</td>
<td>And then Mark Twain wrote about what he knew of Mason and his official activities, and continued: “I cannot myself address the President, but if you have occasion next to speak to your father about official matters, I beg you to mention the Mason case, and tell him how I feel about a government that treats its best officials in such a manner.” Three or four weeks later, Mark Twain received a small envelope, postmarked Washington; inside was a letter in Cleveland's own handwriting and to the following effect: “Miss Ruth Cleveland acknowledges with thanks the receipt of Mr. Twain's letter, and remarks that she has taken the liberty of reading the same to the President, who sends Mr. Twain his appreciation for the information, and assures him that Captain Mason will remain at his Frankfurt post. Also, the President wishes to inform Mr. Twain that if the latter knows of any other cases of a similar nature, the President would appreciate it if Mr. Twain informed him promptly, by which he would be much obliged.”</td>
