<td>Zu Elmira, N.-Y., hielt Pastor Thos. K. Beecher, ein Bruder des verstorbenen Brooklyner Kanzelredners, eine Predigt, welche das Leben Frau Olivia Langdon's, der Mutter Frau Samuel L. Clemens' in Hartford, Conn, zum Gegenstand hatte. Da die Letztgenannte, sowie ihr Gatte, der unter dem Namen Mark Twain bekannte humoristische Schriftsteller, behindert waren, der Predigt beizuwohnen, ließen sie sich dieselbe per Telephon übermitteln. Die 450 Meilen lange telephonische Leitung ging von Elmira über Syracuse, Albany u. Springfield nach Hartford. Die Predigt konnte in der Wohnung Hrn. Clemens' sehr deutlich vernommen werden. Am Abend hielt Pastor Beecher dieselbe Predigt per Telephon für einige Freunde in Buffalo, N.-Y., wo sie gleichfalls sehr deutlich vernommen wurde. Während Hr. Beecher predigte, befand sich der aus einem Blumenkissen hervorragende Schallbecher des Telephons in seiner unmittelbaren Nähe auf der Kanzel.</td>
<td>At Elmira, N.Y., Rev. Thos. K. Beecher, a brother of the late Brooklyn preacher, delivered a sermon on the life of Mrs. Olivia Langdon, mother of [[Olivia Langdon Clemens|Mrs. Samuel L. Clemens]], of Hartford, Conn.. Since the latter, as well as her husband, the humorist writer known as Mark Twain, were unable to attend in person, they had the sermon transmitted by telephone. The 450-mile long telephone line went from [[Elmira]] via Syracuse, Albany and Springfield to Hartford. The sermon could be heard very clearly in Mr. Clemens' apartment. In the evening Pastor Beecher preached the same sermon by telephone to some friends in Buffalo, N.Y., where it was also heard very clearly. While Mr. Beecher was preaching, the transmitter of the telephone, which protruded from a flower cushion, was in his immediate vicinity on the pulpit.</td>
