<td>Der berühmte Humorist, welcher sich unter dem Namen „Mark Twain“ einen Weltruf erworben hat, besuchte vor einiger Zeit Buffalo, wo er früher Jahre lang gewohnt. In einer literarischen Gesellschaft wurde er von dem gleichfalls bekannten Schriftsteller Geo. W. Cable vorgestellt. Mark Twain dankte und sprach alsdann: „„Gar Vieles hat sich geändert, seit ich die Ehre hatte, Bürger von Buffalo zu sein. Ich - wie wir ja Alle - haben den Verlust vieler Freunde zu beklagen. Einige derselben sind zu Grabe gegangen Andere an den Galgen - und wieder Andere in das „Weiße Haus.“ Lasset uns so leben, daß wir bei der Ungewißheit unseres Daseins auf jedes dieser drei Dinge vorbereitet find.““</td>

At a literary society he was introduced by the equally famous writer Geo. W. Cable, also a well-known writer. Mark Twain thanked him and then said: ““Many things have changed since I had the honor of being a citizen of Buffalo. I - like all of us - have mourned the loss of many friends. Some have gone to their graves, others to the gallows, and still others to the White House. Let us live so that in the uncertainty of our existence we may be prepared for each of these three cases.””</td>
