<td>Mark Twain soll den Temperenzweibern von Illinois, welche Autographen berühmter Männer und Frauen sammeln, um dieselben in einem prächtigen Album Frau Hayes in Anerkennung ihrer wässerigen Diners im „Weißen Hause“ zum Geschenke zu machen, folgenden „Kraftspruch“ gewidmet haben: „Die gänzliche Enthaltsamkeit ist eine so vorzügliche Sache, daß sie gar nicht übertrieben werden kann. In meiner Leidenschaft dafür gehe ich so weit, daß ich mich sogar der gänzlichen Enthaltsamkeit enthalte.“</td>
