<td>In der englischen Literatur findet seit geraumer Zeit ein Wettlauf zwischen zwei jungen Dichtern statt, der Diejenigen, welche ihn verfolgen, auf's Höchste interessirt; es sind Bret Harte und Joaquin Miller. Beide haben sich in kurzer Zeit einen großen Namen gemacht, obgleich jeder von ihnen schon ziemlich viel Spreu und Bohnenstroh in die Welt schickte. Harte ist ein bedeutenderer Humorist und besserer Erzähler, als Miller; seine kleinen Erzählungen haben ihn thatsächlich berühmt gemacht; Miller dagegen ist der begabtere, talentvollere Poet und hat jedenfalls das Zeug, das Höchste und Beste zu leisten. Seine Poetischen Erzählungen übertreffen die des Lord Byron, und in seinen Schilderungen ist er thatsächlich einzig, von Keinem seiner Zeitgenossen übertroffen. Beide haben seit sieben Jahren eifrig gestrebt, einander auf allen Gebieten der Literatur Conkurrenz zu machen. Während Miller's &quot;Songs of the Sierras&quot; Epoche machten, wurden dagegen Bret Harte's Gedichte höchstens durch einen „Achtungserfolg&quot; ausgezeichnet; sie hätten es nie zu einer neuen Auflage gebracht, wenn sie nicht den berühmten Namen des Verfassers der „Argonautengeschichten&quot; getragen. Miller hatte dagegen mit seinen Erzählungen wenig Glück, es ging ihm ähnlich, wie Bret Harte mit seinen Gedichten.</td>
<td>There has been a race going on for some time now in English(-language) literature which is of the greatest interest to those who follow it; the two young poets who are competing are Bret Harte and Joaquin Miller. Both have made great names for themselves in a short amount of time, though each has sent a good deal of chaff and bean-straw into the world as well. Harte is a more distinguished humorist and a better story-teller than Miller; his short stories have indeed made him famous; Miller, on the other hand, is the more gifted, more talented poet, and he has what it takes to achieve the highest and best. His poetical narratives surpass those of Lord Byron, and in his descriptions he is indeed unique, unsurpassed by any of his contemporaries. Both writers have been striving eagerly for seven years to rival each other in all branches of literature. While Miller's &quot;Songs of the Sierras&quot; made a huge impression, Bret Harte's poems, on the other hand, were at most distinguished by a &quot;respectable success&quot;; they would never have made it to a new edition if they had not borne the famous name of the author of &quot;The Tales of the Argonauts&quot;.
