<td>Wir haben schon einmal den bekannten Schriftsteller Mark Twain an dieser Stelle über die Situation auf den Sandwichs-Inseln citirt; was seinen Briefen an praktischem Werth für den Staatsmann und Politiker abgeht, ersetzen sie durch Witz und Humor. Mark Twain ist, trotzdem er sehnlichst wünscht, daß „Prinz Bill“ den erledigten Thron besteige, für Annexation der Inseln; er schreibt deshalb an die „New-Yorker Tribüne:“</td>

<td>„Nun, laßt uns diese lnseln annektiren! Bedenken Sie, wie wir von dort aus unserem Wallfischfang aushelfen könnten! Annektiren ist die Losung! Wir könnten dort Zucker genug ziehen, um die ganzen Ver. Staaten zu überzuckern; außerdem würden wir eine prachtvolle, auf halbem Wege gelegene Relay-Station zwischen Asien und Amerika erwerben, sowie ein hübsches Schilderhaus, um das Stille Meer zu überwachen. Wir könnten Baumwolle dort ziehen und Kaffee u., was die Hauptsache ist, wir würden den großartigsten Vulkan der Welt besitzen, den Kilauea! Barnum könnte denselben in Pacht und Betrieb nehmen, wie es sich zeigt, versteht er Etwas vom Feuer. Lasset uns die Inseln um jeden Preis annektiren! Wir könnten den „Prinzen Bill“ und die anderen Edlen des Landes leicht pacifiziren, wenn wir sie auf eine Reservation schickten. Nichts gefällt dem Wilden besser, als eine Reservation, wo er jährlich seine Eggen, Pflüge, Bibeln u. Wolldecken geliefert bekommt, die er dann für Schnapps n. Schießpulver verhandeln kann. So eine Reservation ist ein kleines Arkadien, mit Soldaten eingezäunt. Durch die Annexion tion [sic] würden wir jene 50,000 Wilden spottwohlfeil erhalten; ihre Moral und andere Gebrechen hätten wir als Zugabe. Die Erziehung der Wilden würde uns kein Geld kosten, denn die Leute sind bereits sehr gebildet; wir brauchen sie nicht zu bekehren, sie sind bereits bekehrt; aus gewissen, sehr nahe liegengenden [sic] Gründen brauchten wir sie nicht einmal zu - kleiden. Wir müssen dieses Volk annektiren. Wir könnten dasselbe mit unserer weisen und wohlthätigen Regierung begnadigen; wir könnten sie in jeder Spitzbüberei unterrichten, von dem Taschendiebe an, welcher in der Stadteisenbahn operirt, bis zum Munizipaldiebe und zum Defraudanten der Regierung. Wir könnten ihnen zeigen, wie schön es ist, sie zu verhaften, sie dann frei zu lassen, Einige gegen Baar, Andere wegen ihren politischen Connectionen ! Wir könnten die Leute soweit bringen, daß sie sich ihrer Einfalt und ihrer primitiven Rechtspflege schämten. Wir könnten ihnen das Laster abgewöhnen, gelegentlich einen Mörder zu hängen. Wir könnten ihnen einen Barnard überlassen, um ihre Geld-Corporationen so zu leiten, daß sie in keine Verlegenheiten kommen. Wir könnten ihnen Geschworene zuschicken, die aus den reinsten, unverfälschten Schafsköpfen bestehen. Wir könnten ihnen Bahn-Corporationen geben, welche ihre Gesetzgebung kaufen, wie eine alte Jacke. Anstatt ihrem jetzigen dummen Finanzminister schicken wir ihnen den Tweed zu; auch den Conelly können wir ihnen lassen; den Sweeney leihen wir ihnen auf kurze Zeit; wir können ihnen auch einige Jay Goulds überlassen; lauter schöne Leute, die längst die alte Ansicht über Bord geworfen haben, daß Stehlen keine respektable Angewohnheit ist. Wir können ihnen die Woodhill, die Claflin [Chaflin] und den George Francis Train überlassen; wir können ihnen die Lectürers [lecturers] schockweise zuschicken: ich selbst bin bereit, mich engagiren zu lassen, um jenen unschuldigen Wilden das Evangelium amerikanscher [sic] Civilisation zu predigen.</td>

Think how we could build up that whaling trade! <span class="translationOmission">⟪(Though under our courts and judges it might soon be as impossible for whaleships to rendezvous there without being fleeced and “pulled” by sailors and pettifoggers as it now is in San Francisco - a place the skippers shun as they would rocks and shoals.)⟫</span> Let us annex. We could make sugar enough there to supply all America, <span class="translationOmission">⟪perhaps, and the prices would be very easy with the duties removed.⟫</span> And then we would have such a fine half-way house for our Pacific-plying ships; <span class="translationOmission">⟪and such a convenient supply depot⟫</span> and such a commanding sentry-box for an armed squadron; and we could raise cotton and coffee there <span class="translationOmission">⟪and make it pay pretty well, with the duties off and capital easier to get at.⟫</span> And then we would own the mightiest volcano on earth - Kilauea! Barnum could run it - he understands fires now. Let us annex, by all means. We could pacify Prince Bill and other nobles easily enough - put them on a reservation. Nothing pleases a savage like a reservation - a reservation where he has his annual hoes, and Bibles and blankets to trade for powder and whisky - a sweet Arcadian retreat fenced in with soldiers. By annexing, we would get all those 50,000 natives cheap as dirt, with their morals and other diseases thrown in. No expense for education - they are already educated; no need to convert them - they are already converted; no expense to clothe them - for obvious reasons.  <br/>We must annex those people. We can afflict them with our wise and beneficent government. We can introduce the novelty of thieves, all the way up from street-car pickpockets to municipal robbers and Government defaulters, and show them how amusing it is to arrest them and try them and then turn them loose - some for cash and some for “political influence.” We can make them ashamed of their simple and primitive justice. We can do away with their occasional hangings for murder, <span class="translationOmission">⟪and let them have Judge Pratt to teach them how to save imperiled-assassins to society.⟫</span> We can give them some Barnards to keep their money corporations out of difficulties. We can give them juries composed entirely of the most simple and charming leatherheads. We can give them railway corporations who will buy their Legislatures like old clothes, <span class="translationOmission">⟪and run over their best citizens and complain of the corpses for smearing their unpleasant juices on the track.⟫</span> In place of harmless and vaporing Harris, we can give them Tweed. We can let them have Connolly; we can loan them Sweeny; we can furnish them some Jay Goulds who will do away with their old-time notion that stealing is not respectable. We can confer Woodhull and Chaflin on them. And George Francis Train. We can give them lecturers! I will go myself <span class="translationInsert">{to preach the gospel of American civilization}</span>.</td>
