<td>Folgendes Geschichtchen aus dem Leben Mark Twains finden wir in Wiener Blättern: Der amerikanische Humorist veranstaltete eine Reihe von Vorträgen in Neuseeland. Eines Tages sprach er über die „Prohibition“, das ist jenes Gesetz, das den Verkauf alkoholischer Getränke verbietet. Mark Twain erklärte zwar, daß er ein Anhänger dieser Maßregel sei, aber er mußte anerkennen, daß sie auch ihre umangenehmen Seiten habe, und gab als Beweis dessen Nachstehendes zum Besten: Es sind mehrere Jahre her, daß ein braver Bursche aus dem Westen in eine Stadt kam, für die das Prohibitionsgesetz galt. Er fragte nach einem Wirthshause, aber man sagte ihm, er werde nirgends wo anders etwas zu trinken bekommen, als bei dem Apotheker. Der brave Bursche ging also zum Apotheker und setzte diesem sein Verlangen auseinander. Der aber erklärte: „Ohne Rezept eines Arztes kann ich Ihnen kein Getränk verabfolgen.“ Der Unglückliche entgegnete: „Ich sterbe vor Durst und habe keine Zeit, einen Arzt zu suchen.“ „Dann kann ich Ihnen nicht helfen“, lautete die Antwort, „ich darf alkoholische Getränke bloß in dringenden Fällen verabreichen und speziell nur, wenn Jemand von einer Giftschlange gebissen wurde.“ „Wo ist eine solche Schlange aufzutreiben?“ fragte der vom Durst Gequälte. Der Apotheker gab ihm die Adresse derselben und der Bursche eilte fort. Aber bald kam er wieder, Verzweiflung im Gesichte. „Nun?“ rief der Apotheker. „Gnade!“ jammerte der Andere, „die Schlange kann nicht mehr beißen vor Ueberanstrengung und ist obendrein auf Wochen hinausbestellt.“</td>

I haven't had time to get a prescription.” The apothecary replied, “Well, I haven't power to give you a drink except <span class="translationInsert">{if it's an emergency and specifically}</span> for snake bite.” The man said, “Where's the snake?” So the apothecary gave him the snake's address, and he went off.
