<td>Der bekannte humoristische Schriftsteller Samuel L. Clemens, oder wie er sich auf dem Titelblatte seiner Bücher nennt, Mark Twain, ist heute in Begleitung seiner Frau und Tochter mit dem Dampfer „Norman“ von Tafelbai in der Kapcolonie hier angekommen. Obwohl seine Gesundheit beim Antritt seiner Reise um die Welt nicht die beste war, so daß er oft gezwungen war, zwischen den Vorlesungen das Bett zu hüten, und obwohl er in Indien ziemlich heftig erkrankte, so sah er bei seiner heutigen Landung blühend gesund aus. Er hat auf seiner Reise die Sandwichsinseln, Australien, Indien und Südafrika besucht. Sein Aufenthalt in Transvaal fiel gerade in die Zeit, als daselbst der Prozeß gegen die verhafteten Reformer das Land in die größte Aufregung versetzte. Clemens äußerte sich über das, was er in Südafrika gesehen hatte, sehr befriedigt. Interessant waren seine Schilderungen, die er über den Charakter der Buren gab. Er stellte dieselben, was Ausdauer und Zähigkeit anbetrifft, den Mormonen an die Seite, die auch aus einer Wüste einen blühenden Garten geschaffen hätten. Ueber die amerikanischen Consularbeamten, besonders über den Consul Williams in Johannesburg, sprach sich Clemens überaus anerkennend aus. Auf die Frage, was für Pläne er für's Erste habe, sagte Clemens, daß er nicht länger als ein halbes Jahr in England zu bleiben gedenke. Er wolle diese Zeit an einem stillen Ort zubringen, um ein Buch zu schreiben.</td>
<td>The well-known humorous writer Samuel L. Clemens, or as he calls himself on the title pages of his books, Mark Twain, arrived here today accompanied by his wife and daughter [Clara] on the steamer “Norman” from Tafelbai in the cape colony. Although his health was not the best when he started his trip around the world, so that he was often forced to stay in bed between lectures, and although he fell quite violently ill in India, he looked perfectly healthy when he landed today. He visited the Sandwich Islands, Australia, India, and South Africa on his trip. His stay in the Transvaal was just at the time when the trial of the arrested reformers was causing the greatest excitement in the country. Clemens expressed great satisfaction with what he had seen in South Africa. Interesting were the descriptions he gave of the character of the Boers. In terms of perseverance and tenacity, he put them on a par with the Mormons, who had also transformed a desert into a flourishing garden. Clemens spoke very highly of the American consular officials, especially Consul Williams in Johannesburg. When asked what his plans were for the time being, Clemens said that he did not intend to stay in England for more than half a year. He wanted to spend this time in a quiet place to write a book.</td>

Aus diesem Grunde seien der Doktor und seine verurtheilten Gefährten nach den Holloway-Gefängnissen zurückgebracht worden.</td>
