<td>Mark Twain nennt Berlin das europäische Chicago und der Vergleich stimmt, wenn man das schnelle Wachsthum beider Städte in Betracht zieht. Aber was Chicago seiner geographischen Lage zu danken hat, schuldet Berlin Bismarck's Erfolgen. Augenblicklich sind die Einwohnerzahlen annähernd gleich; aber, wenn Berlin in Zukunft verschiedene Nasenlängen seiner Bewohner zurückbleiben sollte, darf man nicht vergessen, daß enge Landesgrenzen einer Millionenstadt auf die Dauer recht ungesund werden können. Berlin hat viele Neider im Reich. Windthorst nannte es den Wasserkopf Deutschland's und selbst Fürst Bismarck konnte es nie recht besehen.</td>

Und wo hier Gouverneur McKinley in milder Weisheit regiert, hauste dann in Cleveland, das der Entfernung von Warschau entspricht, der grimmige General Gurko, der Liebling des Czaren, der Deutschenfresser und Judenschinder - jeden Augenblick bereit, seine Banditen auf Chicago loszulassen.</td>

Milwaukee würde auf dem Meeresgrunde schlummern, wie das sagenhafte Vineta, und die Bierfässer würden als Vorzeichen auf der Oberfläche schwimmen. Tröstlich nahe wäre aber wieder die dänische Küste, wo am Belt die Möve zieht und die tappern Landsoldaten Schildwacht stehen. Die Hauptstadt Kopenhagen würde bei Fort Howard in Wisconsin liegen.</td>
