<td>In den Schriften des [v]erstorbenen „Mark Twain's“, unse[re]s größten Humoristen, fehlt fast [j]eder sittliche Hintergrund. Auch vermißt man bei dem berühmten Humoristen die Tiefe; andererseits gereicht es ihn zur Ehre, daß er selten frivol ist, niemals cynisch. Werke von unvergänglichem Ruhme hat Mark Twain nicht geschaffen. In hundert Jahren wird man „Innocents Abroad“ wohl kaum viel höher schätzen, als unsere Zeit etwa Knigges Reise nach Braunschweig oder des dänischen Baron Holberg's Gedicht: „Peter Paars und dessen Reise von Kallingburg nach Aars.“ Mit diesem dänischen Dichter aber konnte auch Mark Twain sagen: „Mein Kiel [Ziel] ist ohne Schuld; ich schreibe daß man lacht.“ Und das wollen wir ihm zu gute halten. -</td>
<td>In the writings of the deceased “Mark Twain,” our greatest humorist, there is almost no moral background. One also misses profundity with the famous humorist; on the other hand, it is to his credit that he is seldom frivolous, never cynical. Mark Twain did not create works of everlasting fame. A hundred years from now, “Innocents Abroad” will hardly be held in much higher esteem than our own time would, say, Knigge's Journey to Brunswick or the Danish Baron Holberg's poem: “Peder Paars.” However, Mark Twain could also say like this Danish poet: “My purpose is without fault; I write to make people laugh.” And let's give him credit for that. -</td>
