<td>Der amerikanische Humorist hat nun sein neuestes, in Wien vollendetes Buch „More Tramps Abroad“ herausgegeben. Humoristisch satyrisch knüpft er darin an seine letzten Reisen, auch in Süd-Afrika an. Dort studirte er namentlich auch den kühnen und rücksichtslosen englischen Abenteurer und Colonisator Cecil Rhodes. Und die halb ernste, halb ironische Charakteristik, die er von dem merkwürdigen Manne entwirft, gehört zu den Glanzstellen des Buches. Sie besagt im Wesentlichen folgendes:</td>

<td>„Cecil Rhodes ist ein außergewöhnlicher Mensch und nicht nur das Produkt glücklichen Zufalls. Das bestreiten in Südafrika selbst seine heftigsten Gegner nicht. Ganz Südafrika, und zwar das feindliche, wie das friedliche, erbebt vor ihm in ehrfurchtsvollem Schauer. Die einen erkennen in ihm einen Sendboten Gottes, die anderen einen Abgesandten des Teufels, alle aber einen Herrn der Volksmassen, denen der Hauch seines Mundes Gedeihen oder Verderben bringt. Kein Verständiger verunglimpft seinen Namen, und die Unverständigen thun es nur mit leisem Geflüster. Durch welches Geheimniß übt dieser Mann solche Herrschaft aus? Manche sagen: „durch seinen überschwenglichen Reichthum, der in Gestalt von Besoldungen, Belohnungen und dergleichen auf die Menschenmenge rings umher hinabtröpfelt.“ Andere behaupten: „er fesselt die Menschen durch eine magnetische Kraft; sein Wort hypnotisirt Alle, die in den Bereich seines Einflusses gerathen und verwandelt sie in glückliche Sklaven.“ Viele dagegen erklären: „er verdankt seine Macht seinen großartigen Gedanken und Plänen, sowie der Selbstlosigkeit, mit der er Afrika beschützt und erleuchtet.“ Und endlich giebt es solche, die der Ansicht sind, daß seine Trabanten nur zu ihm halten, weil sie wähnen, daß er ihnen einen Antheil an seinen Erfolgen gönnen wird. Jeder kann sich aus diesen verschiedenen Ansichten eine aussuchen. Sie sind alle von gleichem Werth. Die Thatsache steht fest, daß Cecil Rhodes seine Machtstellung behauptet und ein Heer von Anhängern hat. Er betrog den Herzog von Fife und dieser glaubt nach wie vor an ihn. Er lockte die Reformer (in Johannesburg durch Jameson's Zug) in endlose Unannehmlichteiten, und sie sind dennoch fest davon durchdrungen, daß er es gut mit ihnen meinte. Er vergießt Thränen über Thränen über die hohe Steuer der Johannesburger und bürdet den Ansiedlern seines Landes (Rhodesia) eine Steuer von 50 Procent auf. Er überfällt und plündert, um Sklaven zu erlangen, den Negerstamm der Matabele, und die Charterchristen klatschen Beifall. Er beschwindelt mit werthlosen Charterpapieren die Bank von England, und diese verherrlicht ihn als einen Gott der Freigebigkeit. Er ist die größte Merkwürdigkeit unserer Zeit, die räthselhafteste Persönlichkeit des Jahrhunderts. Für die eine Hälfte der Welt ist er ein beschwingter Erzengel, für die andere ein geschwänzter Teufel. Ich bewundere ihn unverholen; und ist seine Zeit gekommen, so kaufe ich mir als Andenken an ihn ein Endchen seines Strickes.“</td>

One may take his choice. They are all the same price. One fact is sure: he keeps his prominence and a vast following, no matter what he does. He “deceives” the Duke of Fife <span class="translationOmission">⟪- it is the Duke's word -⟫</span> but that does not destroy the Duke's loyalty to him. He tricks the Reformers into immense trouble with his Raid <span class="translationInsert">
</span>, but the most of them believe he meant well. He weeps over the harshly-taxed Johannesburgers and makes them his friends; at the same time he taxes his Charter-settlers <span class="translationChange">⟦translated as “he taxes the settlers on his land (Rhodesia)”⟧</span> 50 per cent., <span class="translationOmission">⟪and so wins their affection and their confidence that they are squelched with despair at every rumor that the Charter is to be annulled⟫</span>.
