<td>Wie ich schon sagte, meine Herren, fuhr Mr. Mac Williams fort, denn dies war nicht der Anfang seiner Rede - die Furcht vor dem Gewitter ist eine der verzweifelndsten Schwächen, mit welcher ein menschliches Geschöpft nur geschlagen sein kann.</td>
<td>Well, sir, - continued Mr. McWilliams, for this was not the beginning of his talk; - the fear of lightning is one of the most distressing infirmities a human being can be afflicted with.</td>

<td>Sie findet sich vornehmlich bei Weibern beiderlei Geschlechts. Hin und wieder kommt sie aber auch bei kleinen Hunden und in einem oder dem anderen Ausnahmsfalle auch wohl bei einem Manne vor. Es ist deshals [sic] eine so verzweifelte Schwäche, weil sie der betreffenden Person das Mark bis zu einem gewissen Grade aus den Knochen nimmt, wie es keine andere Furcht im Stande ist, und weil man sie aus einer Person ebenso wenig mit Beweisgründen herausreden, wie mit Spott aus ihr herausschämen kann. Mehr als eine Frau, welche den Gottseibeiuns selber, ja wohl gar einer auf sie zulaufenden Maus in's Gesicht sehen kann, verliert Angesichts eines Blitzes ihre Fassung und zerfällt während des darauf folgenden Donners zusehends in kleine Stücke. Es ist ein Erbarmen, dabei sein zu müssen, und schon aus diesem Grunde dringend gerathen, Gewitter, wenn es nur irgend angeht, außerhalb des Hauses zu verbringen.</td>
<td>It is mostly confined to women <span class="translationInsert">{of both genders}</span>; but now and then you find it in a little dog, and sometimes in a man. It is a particularly distressing infirmity, for the reason that it takes the sand out of a person to an extent which no other fear can, and it can't be reasoned with, and neither can it be shamed out of a person. A woman who could face the very devil himself - or a mouse - loses her grip and goes all to pieces in front of a flash of lightning. Her fright is something pitiful to see <span class="translationInsert">{and for that reason alone it is advised to spend the time during a thunderstorm outside of the house if this is at all possible}</span>.</td>

<td>Well, as I was telling you, I woke up, with that smothered and unlocatable cry of “Mortimer! Mortimer!” wailing in my ears; and as soon as I could scrape my faculties together I reached over in the dark and then said, - “Evangeline, is that you calling? What is the matter? Where are you?”</td>

<td>“No, I don't see what I've done. A match may attract lightning, for all I know, but it don't cause lightning, - I'll go odds on that. And it didn't attract it <span class="translationOmission">⟪worth a cent⟫</span> this time; for if that <span class="translationInsert">{heavenly}</span> shot was levelled at my match, it was blessed poor marksmanship, <span class="translationOmission">⟪- about an average of none out of a possible million, I should say. Auch finde ich es durchaus nicht hübsch von dir, daß du soviel davon hermachst, da du ganz gut weißt, wie selten es vorkommt. Es ist mir in den letzten vier Jahren nicht mehr passirt, seit ich das Erdbeben über uns gebracht hatte.“</td>

You can't even send a telegraphic message as far as Memphis without relays, so how is a little devotional slip of mine going to carry so far? O, Herr im Himmel, ist es nicht genug, daß unser Leben durch natürliche Ursachen gefährdet wird - muß auch noch dieser Mann Alles, was nun in seinen Kräften steht, thun, um die Gefahr auf künstliche Weise zu vermehren? Und jetzt singt er gar. Mortimer, du kannst wirklich singen?“</td>

I do believe you would deliberately put on those clothes at such a time as this; yet you know perfectly well that all authorities agree that woolen stuffs attract lightning. Oh, dear, dear, it isn't sufficient that one's life must be in peril from natural causes, but you must do everything you can possibly think of to augment the danger. Oh, don't sing <span class="translationChange">⟦translated as “Now he is even starting to sing. Mortimer, can you really sing?”⟧</span>! <span class="translationOmission">⟪What can you be thinking of?⟫</span>”</td>

Du hast die Thür noch nicht halb zugemacht, mache sie doch ganz fest zu und schnell, sonst sind wir alle verloren. Es ist etwas Fürchterliches mit einem Menschen, der in's Irrenhaus gehört, bei einem Wetter wie dieses, in ein Wohnhaus zusammen gesperrt zu sein. Mortimer, was hast du jetzt?“</td>

Anybody that has given this subject any attention <span class="translationChange">⟦translated as “even the most ignorant schoolboy”⟧</span> knows that to create a draught is to invite the lightning. You haven't half shut it; shut it tight, - and do hurry, or we are all destroyed. Oh, it is an awful thing to be shut up with a lunatic at such a time as this. Mortimer, what are you doing?”</td>

Das Buch enthält einige ausgezeichnete Anweisungen, wie man sich bei Gewittern zu benehmen hat, und so viel französisch, wie nöthig ist, um sie zu verstehen, werde ich wohl noch zusammenbringen.“</td>

Und endlich hatte ich die Katze um den Preis von mehr als vierhundert Dollars in Gestalt zerbrochener Möbel, zertrümmerten Porzellans und ruinirten Teppichen und Decken, sicher und fest in eine Schublade der Komode gepfercht. Durch die wiederhergestellte Ruhe aber drangen aus dem Wandschranke die nachstehenden Worte: „Das Buch sagt, das Sicherste ist, sich mitten im Zimmer auf einen Stuhl zu stellen, Mortimer, aber vorher müssen die Beine des Stuhles durch nicht leitende Sachen isolirt werden, das heißt, du mußt sie in Trinkgläser stellen.“</td>

Zugleich erscholl ein so vielstimmiges Rufen und Lachen vor dem Fenster draußen, daß es wohl zehn Minuten währte, bis ich endlich aus dem Chaos der Stimmen die bestimmte Frage heraushören konnte: „Im Namen aller guten Geister, was treiben Sie da, Mr. Mac Williams?“ Es drängten sich etwa ein Dutzend Menschenköpfe vor dem Fenster welche den merkwürdigen kriegerischen Aufzug, in dem ich dastand, anstarrten und offenbar nicht wußten, was sie aus dieser Abwesenheit aller gewöhnlichen Kleidung und deren Ersatz durch einen Feuermannshelm, einem [sic] Bürgerwehrsäbel und einer Tischglocke machen sollten. Ich setzte die Glocke in Ruhe und zog mich von meinem Stuhle, auf welchem sich das Licht der Blendlaterne konzentrirte, in eine etwas dunklere Gegend des Zimmers zurück und rief: „Hier ist gar nichts los, meine lieben Freunde, nur ein wenig Aufregungwegen des furchtbaren Gewitters da und ein paar Vorsichtsmaßregeln gegen das Einschlagen des Blitzes.“</td>
