<td>Vor einigen Jahren erschien Mark Twain im Consulat der Vereinigten Staaten zu Frankfurt am Main und fand zu seinem Erstaunen den General Consul Capitän Mason damit beschäftigt, seine Bücher, Papiere, sowie Habseligkeiten einzupacken „What’s up?“ fragte Mark Twain. „Meine Zeit ist um,“ antwortete Mason heiter. „Wir haben einen demokratischen Präsidenten, und da ich Republicaner bin, so habe ich meine Stellung an einen guten Demokraten abzugeben, welcher bald für Frankfurt ernannt sein wird.“ „Das ist aber wirklich unerhört!“ rief Mark Twain aus, verließ das Consulat und wendete sich nach seinem Hotel, wo er folgenden Brief an die damals einjährige Tochter des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten, Ruth Cleveland, schrieb:</td>
<td>Some years ago, Mark Twain appeared at the United States Consulate at Frankfurt am Main and was astonished to find the Consul General, Captain Mason, busy packing up his books, papers, and belongings “What's up?” asked Mark Twain. “My time is up,” replied Mason cheerfully. “We have a Democratic president, and as I am a Republican, I have to give up my position to a good Democrat, who will soon be appointed to Frankfurt.” “But this is really outrageous!” exclaimed Mark Twain, leaving the Consulate and turning to his hotel, where he wrote the following letter to the then one-year-old daughter of the President of the United States, Ruth Cleveland:</td>

It is quite harmless, however, if I address these kind lines to you to tell you that your father is about to commit a great crime in wanting to put the best Consul I know (and I know a great many) out of office just because he is a Republican and a Democrat wants his seat.”</td>

Mason und seiner amtlichen Thätigkeit wußte, und fuhr weiter fort: „Ich selbst kann mich nicht an den Präsidenten wenden, wenn du aber nächstens Gelegenheit hast, mit deinem Vater über Amtssachen zu sprechen, so bitte ich dich, den Fall Mason zu erwähnen, und ihm zu sagen, wie ich über eine Regierung denke, die ihre besten Beamten in solcher Weise behandelt.“ Drei oder vier Wochen später erhielt Mark Twain ein kleines Couvert mit dem Poststempel Washington, in welchem ein Brief in Cleveland’s eigener Handschrift und folgenden Inhalts steckte: „Miß Ruth Cleveland bestätigt dankend den Empfang von Mr. Twain’s Brief und bemerkt, daß sie sich die Freiheit genommen hat, denselben dem Präsidenten vorzulesen, welcher Mr. Twain bestens für seine Informationen danken läßt und ihm die Versicherung gibt, daß Capitän Mason auf seinem Frankfurter Posten verbleiben wird. Auch wünscht der Präsident, Mr. Twain zu verständigen, daß, falls Letzterer noch einige andere Fälle ähnlicher Art wüßte, er ihm umgehend schreiben möchte, wodurch er ihn sehr verbinden würde.“</td>
<td>And then Mark Twain told what he knew of Capt. Mason and his official activity, and continued, “I cannot myself address the President, but if you have occasion next to speak to your father about official matters, I beg you to mention the Mason case, and tell him how I feel about a government that treats its best officials in such a manner.” Three or four weeks later, Mark Twain received a small envelope, postmarked Washington, containing a letter in Cleveland's own handwriting and to the following effect: “Miss Ruth Cleveland acknowledges with thanks the receipt of Mr. Twain's letter, and remarks that she has taken the liberty of reading the same to the President, who sends Mr. Twain his best thanks for his information, and assures him that Captain Mason will remain at his Frankfurt post. Also, the President desires to inform Mr. Twain that if the latter knows of any other cases of a similar nature, the President would appreciate it if Mr. Twain informed him promptly.”</td>
